First week as councillor for North Sydney

This past Monday, January 10th 2022, I have taken my oath to serve as councillor for North Sydney.

The oath ceremony was followed by the first council meeting of 2022 during which the election for Mayor and Deputy Mayor took place. During this first council meeting, I also presented three motions as a matter of urgency on specific development policies which I consider to be of great importance to our community.

- Motion 1: Rescission Motion: recission of the planning process that may allow 12 stories in Neutral Bay

- Motion 2 - Amendment of North Sydney LEP: motion to remove the addition of residential flat buildings in R3 medium density zones

- Motion 3 - Creation of Heritage Conservation Area: protection of heritage houses in Parraween St Cremorne.

It was great seeing the unanimous support from councillors towards these motions. North Sydney Council agreed to adopt my second and third motions, with the first one to be considered during the next council meeting.

Following this first council meeting, I submitted a notice for an Extraordinary Council Meeting which is to be held within 2 weeks of my request (supported by Cr Ian Mutton).

Additionally, having seen and experienced first-hand the poor quality of the IT facilities on the Chambers as well as having received feedback from attendees who joined digitally, I also submitted the motion below aimed for Council to urgently address these matters. I have requested for this motion to be discussed during the Extraordinary Council Meeting mentioned above. Given that we are limiting the number of in-person attendees to Council meetings, Council has a duty to provide a usable (and, ideally, leading) solution to this.

Following my first week at council, I am truly excited to see that my fellow councillors and I align on many issues. Most importantly, I am eager to work towards getting council up to a proper standard and get it moving faster than its current typical government pace.

Of course, nothing is done until it is done. I will make sure to keep on these issues (and other issues yet to be addressed) until they are implemented as they were passed. There is much still to do in 2 years and 9 months and no time to waste!
