James Spenceley

Independent candidate
for North Sydney Council

I'm running in the North Sydney council election.

This year's elections will be held on December 4th 2021.

Creating a connected, sustainable, and revitalised North Sydney

About Me

First and foremost a little about me. I’m a family man and passionate local resident. My children were born in St Leonards and go to school in the area. I’ve lived most of my adult life here across North Sydney, Crows Nest, Cremorne Point and now Cremorne and my office is in Neutral Bay. I love the area.

I’ve been lucky to have had a wonderful and successful business career, twice being recognised by winning the Australian Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

In 2007, I founded and was the CEO of Vocus Group (ASX:VOC) which I grew from just a few staff in Miller Street North Sydney, to the fourth largest telecommunications business and multi-billion dollar ASX listed company, with well over a thousand staff. I am proud to have built that business in the North Sydney CBD.

Presently, I work with a few different companies. As the Chairman of Airtasker (ASX:ART), I have been involved in a business that has created over $1.1 billion in flexible work opportunities for every day Australians. I am also on the board of Kogan.com (ASX:KGN) which is recognised today as a household name, selling close to $1 billion in products per year to over 4 million Australian consumers.

I am also passionate about community and charity. For two years, I was an Ambassador for the Children’s Cancer Institute’s CEO Dare to Cure program and was proudly their largest fundraiser during this period. I also believe strongly in the benefits of diversity and spent two years as an Ambassador for the Women on Boards program.

Having gained an enormous amount of experience in business across many industries I’ve also come to understand that none of that is important if we don’t protect and care for our environment. I believe local council has a huge opportunity to be a leader in promoting and encouraging sustainability.

My goal, if elected, is to reduce the politics-first culture, work co-operatively to make great community driven decisions and operate the business of council efficiently while providing the best services and making the biggest positive impact to the environment. - James

Carbon Neutral Campaign

Your own actions best define what you stand for

The environmental impact of my North Sydney council campaign will be tracked and offset with certified climate actions project to reduce the carbon impact of the campaign to zero.

Our corflutes will be collected and recycled by Corex at the end of our campaign. Our campaign t-shirts will be taken to the Textile Recyclers of Australia warehouse in Sydney (authorised suppliers for Green Ceramics) who turn textiles into kitchen benches, table tops, floor tiles and furnishings!

James is a passionate and generous supporter of our research to find a cure for every child from cancer; to help us achieve this aim he has faced his fears by jumping into a snake bath for our CEO Dare to Cure challenge! His personal generosity and advocacy made him our top fundraiser, contributing almost $60,000.
With the valuable support of people like James we believe we will discover a cure for all childhood cancers in the foreseeable future.

BEYOND22

Charter of Behaviour

One of the main reasons I’m seeking election to North Sydney council is to improve the behaviour, reduce the politics first culture and create a culture from the top that not only allows council to get the big things done but also allows the little to be done right automatically.

To create a leading Culture, we first need to align on principles, those being;

  • Organisations that delight their constituents, do so by making many thousands of individually small but great decisions

  • You can’t individually manage every decisions made by an organisation

  • Given you can’t manage individual decisions, Culture therefore dictates how your organisation will act

  • The only way to create a leading organisation is by putting effort, work and resources into Culture

  • Good Culture isn’t about posters on the wall, it must be tangible and it must be lived by example

  • It is not just for employees to live that culture, it must be lived from the top down, leaders must demonstrate and live the Culuture

  • For North Sydney to be an organisation that delights their constituents we must have a Great Culture and that must start from the top.

For this, I am launching my Beyond22 Charter of Behaviour.

I have already signed this and I am willing to be held accountable to it. For those councillors seeking election and those successfully elected to the 2022 and beyond council, we need to start fresh beyond 2022 so I believe we all need to sign up to behave in a way that creates a culture that encourages the organisation delight and make the residents of North Sydney proud.
